Non-profit governance: how to raise your governance rating

Three standards shape your organisation's governance rating and its standing with donors. Here is what to put in order first.

Saudi Arabia's non-profit sector is going through fast legislative change, and governance has become a condition of trust and sustainability rather than an option. The National Center for Non-Profit Sector Development assesses entities' governance against standards whose results feed into their published rating and their standing with donors and the public.

The three standards

  • Compliance: meeting the statutory requirements and the basic regulation, and keeping them current.
  • Financial integrity: spending controls, internal control and sound financial reporting.
  • Disclosure and transparency: publishing information and reports in a way that builds public and donor trust.

To get there, an association needs a package of mandatory and guidance policies, around thirteen of them, including conflicts of interest, fundraising, AML, whistleblowing and data privacy.

At Batat we prepare this package and support entities through self-assessment, governance data disclosure and the Makeen standards, raising their governance rating.
